What is Karate?
Karate, or Karate-do is a martial art. It is a striking art featuring; punching, kicking, knee/elbow strikes and open handed techniques. A person who practises Karate is known as a Karate-ka.
There are 3 main areas of Karate;
Further areas of division are between;
- Art
- Sport
- Self defence training
For each style of Karate, and even amongst individuals within styles, there is a different personal view and emphasis on the art/sport. Some practitioners believe 'pure' Karate is not a sport, yet it is clear from the number of competitions and squads that many people enjoy the competitive aspects. The word 'sport' seems inappropriate in the western definition, yet Karate is for many clearly more than an art.
Karate is taught in a Dojo - which can be an area or room - it is whatever an instructor defines.
Karate has a code which is practiced both inside and outside of the Dojo which is broadly;
- Seek Perfection of Character
- Be Faithful
- Endeavour
- Respect Others
- Refrain from Violent Behaviour
Therefore, these codes define the character of a person who practises Karate. Courtesy is required in all aspects of Karate both inside and outside of the Dojo. It is this aspect of Karate that is invaluable in developing and guiding any young person who gets involved.
